Scammers are stealing checks from the mail. Here’s how to protect yours
Thieves steal paper checks from mailboxes, chemically wash off the ink, and rewrite them to new payees. The Postal Service reports this check fraud has been rising.
How it works
The scam starts with mail theft, usually from outgoing mail left in a mailbox. Thieves take envelopes containing checks, then use chemicals to lift the ink so the check can be rewritten. They make the check out to themselves or others and cash or deposit it, which drains the account the check was drawn on.
Red flags to watch for
- Outgoing bill payments by check go missing
- Your mailbox has been tampered with or forced open
- Bank statement shows a check to an unknown payee
- Check amount or payee differs from what you wrote
- Bills you mailed show as unpaid
What to do
Do not leave outgoing checks in an unlocked or street-side mailbox. Take them to a post office counter or pay in person or electronically when you can. Check your bank account often, and report any altered or unknown check to your bank right away.
