Broward Sheriff’s Office warns residents about resurfacing jury duty scams

How it works

You receive an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be from the court or judiciary. They tell you that you missed federal jury duty and an arrest warrant has been issued. They demand immediate payment of thousands of dollars via a kiosk or wire transfer, and request a video conference with someone posing as a judicial officer to intimidate you into paying.

Red flags to watch for

• Legitimate courts never call demanding upfront payment

What to do

Do not pay money or participate in any video call. Hang up immediately. If you are concerned about jury duty obligations, call your local court directly using the phone number from the court's official website, not a number the caller provided. Report the scam to the Broward Sheriff's Office and to reportfraud.ftc.gov.
